Stewart Iron Works Chosen to Restore Our Own Century Old Fence
The Kentucky Department of Highways is widening 4th Street at Newtown Pike in Lexington, Ky, to accomodate the new Bluegrass Community and Technical College Campus being built on the 48-acre site, once home to Eastern State Hospital. The plans call for the current Stewart Iron Works fence, originally installed in 1905, to be removed, sandblasted, repaired, restored and reinstalled along the 4th Street corridor following completion of construction.
The Kentucky Heritage Council's involvement in the planning process of this new campus and vital highway project, insures the continued preservation of Lexington’s rich and storied heritage!
Stewart Iron Works takes great pride in restoring the custom wrought iron fences created by our craftsmen since the early 1900's! Research by Nicholasville historian Peter Brackney indicates that the original contract for the fence was dated 1905.
The photos above attest to the century-long endurance of a Stewart Iron Works creation!
The restoration efforts of our craftsmen will recapture the original beauty of this historic fence, which will grace the campus for centuries to come!!
